Felix Schlag won $1,000 in a competition with 390 artists for the design of the Jefferson nickel.
All of the Jefferson nickels, except the "war nickels" were made of copper and nickel. Starting in October of 1942 through 1945 nickel was removed from the coin and was used for the war effort. During the same time, there was a slight design change. The mint mark was increased in size and place above the dome, and nickels made at the Philadelphia mint had their mint mark "P" on them. In 1946 the P mint mark was removed again.
This is the new 2004 Proof Jefferson Nickel with the Keelboat Reverse
These coins have a beautiful strong cameo coins made by the US Mint and both the obverse and reverse have strong mirror like surfaces, and dress up the coin set and make it look very interesting to all who view it.
These are all Proof 2006 Jefferson Nickels and this picture shows an important feature of the Deep Mirror Proof Coins. Notice the fields look black and that the devices (in this case Jefferson image) look like a cameo (white) yet, you can see how bright the coins are by the rim reflection of the light. This picture demonstrates the phrase "BLACK ON WHITE " cameo used in many trade journal and advertisements.
